How about a "plant shelf" that just happens to be the size of a landing with some "decorative" railings, designed with the company logo ? It can easily be framed back in to the size and shape of an access hatch. If it stays as an opening with some ugly chains or a gate it will still attract the eye. And it is in the lobby where any kind of ugly will be noticed quickly.
 
They can have some fun with it and put the guest seating under the door.
