    Ramp and doorways

Can the 60" clear length of a ramp landing (ICC A117.1-2009, section 405.7.3) have a door swing over it? Section 405.7.5 says "where doorways are adjacent to a ramp landing", and then the commentary says "...doors are permitted only adjacent to the ramp and not adjacent to or on the ramp...

    Commodities classification

Are there things stored which would not be classified as even a class 1 commodity- if it's non-combustible and is just stored in heaps without packaging or pallets? 2015 IFC 3203, I notice them list "inert materials, bagged"... so I think they imply that inert materials not in bags then are not...

    2015 IEBC 1012.5.1.1

@RLGA how is the frontage increase used here? The non-sprinkled area limit is 14500 SF for group E, so would that mean it'd just need to have 2hr fire barriers creating areas of under 25375 SF (that's 1.75 times 14500, they have the entire frontage increase on the site) in the old E portion?

    2015 IEBC 1012.5.1.1

My jurisdiction doesn't allow the prescriptive method. I think the performance method is now chp 14 in the 2015, and it is allowed, but I'm just trying to understand the work area method.

    2015 IEBC 1012.5.1.1

There's a building with groups E, B and I4. The E wants to expand into some of the B space. Fully sprinkled, IIB,1-story, I'm using 2015 IBC and 2015 IEBC. In IEBC 1012.5.1.1, they'd meet the 1st and 3rd condition, but I'm not certain I'm understanding the interpretation of #2 to know it's...

    Daycare toilets, IBC 2902.1

In 2015 IBC table 2902.1, it requires 1:15 toilets in a daycare and 1:50 in educational. So if a daycare is classified as an E, would they follow the 1:50? Our local rules allow the kids under 2.5yrs to be left out of the toilet fixture counts.

Allowable Area 508.4.2, how to do this math?

My state went from 2009 to 2015, was there a big shift in allowable areas between those two? I did not have occasions to use 2009 much at the time, and now just trying to get a handle on 2015 first....

Allowable Area 508.4.2, how to do this math?

In 2015 IBC, 508.4.2, when they say "divided by the allowable building area of each separated occupancy", is this the allowable area from the table, or from 506.2.4? (or elsewhere else???) For example: I've got a 2-story sprinkled VB, there's A2 downstairs and R2 upstairs (Just to make math...

    Maneuvering clearance at automatic door

I've got an existing building with a manual front main entrance door, which is lacking the required 18" clearance (seen in table 404.2.3.2, ICC A117.1-2009) for front approach from pull side. In considering installing an automatic door, I see 404.3.2 requiring them to return to section 404.2.3...

    Stories with one exit, 1006.3.2(2)

Thank you so much RLGA!!! Follow-up question now....considering1006.3.2, number 2 "Rooms, areas and spaces complying with Section 1006.2.1 with exits that discharge directly to the exterior at the level of exit discharge, are permitted to have one exit or access to a single exit"... Right now...

    Stories with one exit, 1006.3.2(2)

If a group B occupancy wants to have a 2nd floor with only 1 exit, I used 2015 IBC table 1006.3.2(2) to see that they need to limit capacity to 29 but I'm not understanding the other column "maximum common path of egress travel distance".... I think of 'common path' as meaning how far you go...

    Accessibility with change of use

No, non-separated, except IBC 420 for the apartments from each other and rest of building. The office had a couple non-accessible old bathrooms, so they're going to use those. It's going to be pretty small. ADAguy- what does T-III mean?

    Accessibility with change of use

2105 IEBC I've got a 2-story building with a office occupancy on 1st and apartments on 2nd. They're proposing a partial change of use to the building, to make the 1st floor a daycare (E). The building has no accessible entrances, due to door clearances and/or steps. I'm at IEBC 1012.8.1, but...

    Group E daycare

Hi! Checking back in w/ this question, sorry for such a delay! The question keeps coming up in reviews for change of use. It will be a daycare, trying to move into a former, group B space, which is not sprinkled. They'll put the kids in the 'front' rooms, where there's a door right out to the...

Sorry, checking my notes, it's type 1B construction... Will R still limit it?

    Unlimited area and separated uses

2015 IBC. In an existing type 1A building, will be changing use to A3, R1 & S1…. The S1 is to be separated by 1hr construction. It will be fully sprinkled. Can the rest of the building then be unlimited area?

    Group E daycare

2015 IBC Chp 308.6.1, “A child day are facility that provides care for more than five but not more than 100 children 2 ½ years or less of age, where rooms in which the children are cared for are located on a level of exit discharge serving such rooms and each of these child care rooms has an...

    Ambulatory toilet stalls

If a toilet compartment is not required to be ambulatory (2015 IBC 1109.2.2), can the builder still install grab bars in those toilet compartments? Must the bars then be in compliance with ICC A117.1-2009 section 604 as to dimensions & location? I think the argument being made is that there...

    Sprinklers in existing I4

Does an level 3 (2009 IEBC) alteration of an existing I4 require sprinklers to be installed? No applicable state code amendments to consider. I'm reading that 801.2 says that 704 then is required to be followed throughout the entire work area. In this instance, work area is about 100%...

    BEST LED flash light? Suggestions?

Mine says "LED Lenser" on it, I got it at Home Depot a couple years ago for like $45. It seemed like a lot then, but since it's lasted a few years it's more than paid for itself. It's about 4" long, operates with a button on the end, and has been dropped quite a few times and held up so far...

5 Operations to Retract the Latch??

I would order these off using "1008.1.8.4 Bolt locks. Manually operated flush bolts or surface bolts are not permitted." The part about doors in pairs is the exception, not what kind of doors it's applicable to. All the sections of 1008.1.8 is dealing with egress door operation, so I apply the...

    Lock on an exit

Yeah, cda, I don't know how someone operates a thumb turn without some sorta-pinching and then twisting of the wrist. What I imagine is kind of awkward :D

    Lock on an exit

I'm getting some schooling here on deadbolts I guess... I didn't know there was one that retracts-only. I found a list here, http://archtoolbox.com/materials-systems/doors-windows/7-door-hardware-function.html, and after reading it really carefully, I *think* the one you mean is called a...

    Lock on an exit

cburgess, if you are saying the thumb-turn is OK on a main door in a place of assembly cap 300, then I disagree. 1008.1.8.3 tells you precisely what lock you CAN use, and considering it in combination with 1008.1.9, there are no other acceptable hardware allowed in this case. Your thumb turn...

    Lock on an exit

I just saw the 2009 section of this same subject got all re-organized. Would this question be the reason for the re-organization? They no longer start with the requirements of the devices, but with a description of where it's required.... hmmm.... 1008.1.10 Panic and fire exit hardware. Doors...
