    Fire extinguisher travel distance

Ah shucks! It's noce to feel welcome and missed. Between the busy work schedule and the doctor appointments I barely have time to take a . . . well I barely have any time. ;)

    Fire extinguisher travel distance

right! Around any obstructions and around any corners. The idea is to place it so that it is within a certain "time" to reach it. That has to be measured as you would travel to get the extinguisher.

    2nd floor under 3000

I talked with ICC about this on a project about a year ago. Even the accessible means of egress must be provided. The reasoning is that if access is provided, then the only thing needed is that access and there will not be extensive modifications needed for accessibility. Additionally, there...

    B- OCCupancy

There is only signage required when not everything is accessible. If all rooms meet the criteria then there is no special "accessible room" signage - only the standard tactile signage for permanent room signs.

    B- OCCupancy

The only disagreement seems to be whether the number of accessible rooms must be 5% or all of them. The last DBTAC/Access Board webinar raised this issue. According to them, all the rooms must be accessible. But as noted above, the tanning beds are furniture and only built-in furnishings are...

    2nd floor under 3000

Everything on the upper floors needs to be designed for accessibility. The only exception is the access to the upper floors. Elevators or ramps are not required. Everything else is.

    Detectable warnings

Mark's right. You can go even further though and say that they're prohibited. Under the concept of a firm and stable surface with no changes in elevation, the introduction of truncated domes to an area that does not require them can be problematic and potentially hazardous in and of...

    FRTW plywood needed or not?

Peach, you are so right! Even if the hair stylist is numb from the waist down, they still check the temperature with their hands before starting (unless of course the customer is a complete jerk, in which case the water is ice cold). Full disclosure: my wife is a stylist. She used to own a...

    ICC Alive and Thriving

Ben you can still order through ICC. You just have to pay the non-member price. You might also try BNI code books. I don't think they're much cheaper (if at all) but its another source.

    FRTW plywood needed or not?

I have to agree with Ron about the substrate. They'll probably need plywood or some type of blocking for the grab bars in the accessible stall but Section 1210.2 would stop the usage of plywood unless the mortar has a waterproof sealer integral to it. The joints are NOT nonabsorbent unless...

Not Accessibility But ADA... Protection of Supply Lines on Sinks

Mule, Its what Mark's posting was noting earlier. The hair washing sink becomes an employee work station. If insulation is needed for that individual who washes hair, then Title I of the ADA would dictate that reasonable accommodations must be made which would include protection of the piping...

    Exiting through a Break Room?

Maybe I should post the layout of our old office since one of the exits was though the break room.

    Calabasas widens building-code crackdown

What!? Can't a person go camping on their own property? ;) Seriously! There's a lot of bigger issues than a simple septic system there.

    Maneuvering Clearance - ADA

Examiner, Exception #3 to Section 1008.1.4.2 (2009) allows for the individual leaf to be less than 32 inches for bi-parting power operated doors.

    Maneuvering Clearance - ADA

They are actually planning on a new document to explain the details in the 2010 Standards "technical" provisions. Much of the "Guidance" document is about the authority, thresholds and scoping requirements. There is little about the technical provisions. Because most of the 2010 Standards are...

Notification Systems and Visual (Strobe) Appliances

Check out Section 908 in the IBC. Its not a lot of help now. If I recall correctly, the 2012 text will expand this to make is usable for a variety of emergency alarm notification situations.

    Maneuvering Clearance - ADA

Short answer: 90 minutes. (But for what activity on the door???) I spoke with the Access Board. This is an item that will be addressed in more detail in the Commentary that they are producing to assist in understanding the new rules. It was a last minute change that went in to appease a...

    Maneuvering Clearance - ADA

Just for curiosity, is this a real problem? If its a MEO door its likely to swing in the direction of travel and most automatic doors do not have latches so the maneuvering clearances are simply the width of the door on the push side.

    Maneuvering Clearance - ADA

Hi Lori, Neither the ADA standard nor the BHMA standards are specific about the duration of the standby power. With that void, the default is the NEC which requires 90 minutes of power. I have a call into the Access Board for another issue. Once I get that call, I'll ask if there was...

    Vertical Exit Enclosures: Remote Location

Remote means remote as the code assumes egress must be. Its from Section 1015.2 on the IBC: 1015.2.1 Two exits or exit access doorways. Where two exits or exit access doorways are required from any portion of the exit access, the exit doors or exit access doorways shall be placed a...
