New member here. Thanks for allowing me to be here. I took the job as Building Commissioner on the 8th of this month. While the inspecting and office part are new to me the construction world is not. I have been in construction for the last 15 years and for the last 10 have been a lead commercial electrician for a large outfit in my area. I am looking forward to obtaining my ICC certifications here in the coming future and making sure things are being properly built in my area.

Hello, My name is Christos. I am an Architect licensed in California since 2018. I spend a lot of time reading the code but often find myself questioning verbiage and I'm hoping this forum can help me deepen my understanding of the building code.

Welcome, Christos! This is THE best forum to ask questions and get quality answers! There are plenty of California members (architects & engineers as well as code officials) along with other very knowledgeable architects, engineers and code officials from all over North America. I'll also echo Fatboy's comment - take the plunge and become a Sawhorse. For the amount of wisdom and depth of knowledge here it is well worth the yearly price! Hello, my name is Tim, I am the Chief Building Official for a Native American Tribal Lands, (Sovereign Nation) I have been in the building enforcement game (building inspector/plans examiner/CBO) for over 20 yrs. and prior to that have close to 20 years in construction, I am hoping I can be able to bounce questions and ideas around on this forum, there are a lot of interesting things going on in the tribal lands throughout the US of A.

Welcome, Tim! I think as a CBO for a sovereign nation, you can provide us a valuable perspective.

About 10 years ago I had heard of an affordable housing consortium that was negotiating with a So Cal tribe to have a housing design competition on their sovereign land, with the bill for the competition footed by a large private foundation. The idea was that the sovereignty would allow designers to "throw out the rule book" of zoning and building codes and innovate with a performance based approach, with the foundation bringing experts to evaluate which designs worked best. Kind of similar to the "solar decathlon" only it was to be for an entire development, not just an individual house.

Anyway, I'm interested in hearing about what kind of opportunities and challenges you face in a jurisdiction which (I assume?) has more independence from state legislatures regarding use of model codes.
 
Hi all! My name is Luke and I'm excited to be here on TBCF.

I joined a few months back and have been spending many hours poring over the forum. There is a wealth of information about the industry here and I look forward to continuing to learn from all of you.

Transparently, I joined the site because I would like to pivot away from what I do today: working as the software lead of an education technology company. I’m interested in building technology tools for the permitting process and/or going into third party plan review. I’m also studying for the B3 exam to get a better sense of the codebook.

An initial ask: If there are any members of the site open to a brief call, I’d love to have a conversation about some of the ideas kicking around in my head. And if there are BOs/examiners/inspectors in the NYC-area who are feeling especially generous, I would love the opportunity to briefly shadow you. My DMs are open.

And an offer: If there are any outstanding technical needs for the site, I’d love to volunteer some of my time to help address. I don’t have experience with Xenforo, but I have a decade in software development and think I could be helpful. Again DMs are open.

Happy to be here and hopefully contribute meaningfully.

Just tried my first comment to a post but got a message "Your content can not be submitted. This is likely because your content is spam-like or contains inappropriate elements". How do I submit the comment for review & approval? (The last forum post was from 9/3/24, is that too old to respond to?)

You just did comment so it should work in any forum you have access to.
